Benefits of Omega 3 in ADD or ADHD
Chewable omega 3 can benefit those children with ADD or ADHD. Despite the controversy over Ritalin, some parents of anxiety-ridden children continue to rely on prescription medication to calm them down. They think, “if there are problems with Ritalin, then my child will take something else”.
What’s surprising is that not many parents think of Omega-3 as a safer and more viable solution. They either are not aware of the benefits of Omega-3 for children or were made to believe that only prescription medication will control hyperactivity levels.
When it comes to children, parents must be informed immediately of the potential risks associated with Ritalin and other similar drugs. About three years ago, there were news reports of American and British children dying from Ritalin.
Whether or not it was the direct cause or it aggravated an underlying health condition is not the point. The point is, why give children prescription drugs known for their side effects when Omega-3 can do a better job?
If you think your child has ADD or ADHD you may want to visit Alternative ADD ADHD Treatment for more information about Attention Deficit Disorder.
ADD or Attention Deficit Disorder and ADHD or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder can affect both adults and children, although a much higher number of children exhibit the classic symptoms.
ADD and ADHD point to an irregularity in the brain and is considered a biological disorder. The number of children diagnosed with ADD and ADHD is staggering. About 10 years ago, not much was known about these disorders; thousands of parents dismissed their children’s erratic behavior as growing-up pains. According to reports published by the American Psychiatric Association, about 5% of American children in pre-school and higher suffer from ADD/ADHD.

In June 2006, Fiona Macrae of the Daily Mail cited research that was carried out in England’s Durham Local Education Authority and Australia’s University of Adelaide. The research involved Omega-3’s ability to boost brain activity and stimulate better concentration in children suffering from attention deficit disorder (ADD).
Omega-3 – also called fish oil – was given to ADD children over a three-month period. At the end of the study, the behavior of the children dramatically improved. The most striking outcome was that the children were were reading more and able to concentrate.
Ms. Macrae wrote, “British experts said the research which is to be published in the Journal of Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics underlined the value of exploring other alternative treatments to Ritalin.”
Just how many prescriptions are written out each year? Macrae says a “staggering 330,000 prescriptions…or 6,350 a week.” The ideas conveyed in McCrae’s article were echoed by the Manchester Evening News saying that before treating children with poor concentration and study skills, alternative treatments must first be considered before considering medication. Britain’s Health Secretary announced that school children might be given fish oil supplements to help improve their concentration. One such chewable omega 3 fish oil supplement is Bright Brain, a delicious chewable omega 3 supplement that kids love.
Seafood like salmon are good sources of fish oil although there is controversy about fish caught in the Atlantic Ocean as not being 100% safe. The next best alternative would be fish oil supplements; consumers are advised, however, to make sure that these supplements do not contain any artificial preservatives and that they were processed under strictly-controlled laboratory conditions.
For children with ADD or ADHD, it is usually recommended that they take higher levels of omega 3 fatty acids EPA and DHA. Metagenics Omegagenics EPA-DHA 1200 provides 600mg of both EPA and DHA.
Omega 3s for Your Children
For years you’ve been hearing about how omega 3 fatty acids are important to the cognitive function and mental development of children, and there is now very interesting research that shows how a lack of omega 3 fatty acids can hinder the learning process and potentially exacerbate bad behavior. Just about every child can benefit from omega 3 supplementation, and if your children aren’t taking an omega 3 fatty acid supplement, you should put serious consideration into having them start.
Prior to the study, which was conducted at Oxford University, it was found that children regularly had low levels of omega 3 fatty acids. The long chain fatty acids, like DHA, are essential to the growth of the brain’s structures, and, to see how these affected children, researchers analyzed the blood samples of nearly 500 children. The children selected in this study were believed to have reading skills that were below average, and nearly all of them had low levels of omega 3. It is generally recommended that omega 3 fatty acids constitute a minimum of four percent of the blood, and this is important to the function of the not just the brain, but also the cardiovascular system. The children studied in this trial were found to only have about 2.45 percent omega 3 fatty acids in their blood.
This shows a dietary trend that needs to be rectified. Children tend to eat very little fish to begin with, and even when eating plenty of fish it can still be hard to get the beneficial amounts of omega 3 fatty acids. For most the only real way to get the proper amount of omega 3 fatty acids is through a fish oil supplement. For those that are allergic to fish or prefer to not consume it, there are also plant based omega 3 supplements.
In children, the frustration of having trouble learning is often accompanied by poor behavior, but fish oils and omega 3 fatty acids may also help with this. One study took a look at how fish oils, provided by Nordic Naturals, could help with behavior. Ten boys and ten girls were screened and ranked independently based on their functional difficulties and behavior. The children took part in the HANDLE (Holistic Approach to NeuroDevelopment and Learning Efficiency) program, which seeks to help children by addressing their diet and activity. The children were given Nordic Naturals ProEFA Junior, which provides EPA, DHA, and borage oil, and after the study, which lasted 5 months, 17 of the 20 children showed a behavioral improvement. The three children that were ranked the worst for behavior and functional difficulties showed the greatest improvement, while those that were the best showed the least improvement. There are many who believe, and there is research to support the theory that diet may play a key role in depression, and/or mental illness. Here is an interesting article in the 2nd quarter of 2008 Indian Journal of Psychiatry. There’s also a great book, written by a young man with schizoaffective disorder, called Healing Schizoaffective, that sheds light on the illness as well as offering hope of recovery. It shows that you can help recover from schizoaffective disorder without medication.
Fish oils are needed by people of all ages, but they play a particularly important role in the cognitive development of children. If you’re children aren’t taking an omega 3 supplement, you should probably start them on one, because omega 3 fatty acids promote the learning process and can fight behavior problems.
Continue to research the benefits of chewable omega 3 supplements for your child with ADD or ADHD and you will find that fish oil supplements can play an important role in improving ADD and ADHD symptoms.
